About Hammertoe

What is it?

It is often due to traumas, even slight, where the tip of the fingers crashes on a rigid surface ( sport, entrapment of the finger during the sheets placing in the bed).

It is often associated with a small fracture of the distal phalanx because the broken tendon involves a small insertion fragment to the bone.

Among the most common causes:

- Traumas - even slight - of fingers without wounds
- Wounds in the back of the finger

What are the symptoms?

- Wounds in the back of the fingers
- Inability (or pain) when extending the fingers
- Motility alterations (final portion of the finger is bent)
- Pain in the distal portion of the finger
- Swelling
- Pain when moving fingers

How is it treated?

All the wounds of the hand should be surgically explored.

“Noble” structures are many and even a small nerve and/or tendon tearing can be easily treated if recognized in emergency. If there are no injuries and the lesion is recognized immediately, it is possible to carry out a treatment with braces If there is an associated fracture, sugrery is the most appropriate treatment In the postoperative period, patient should wear braces, and physiotherapy is often recommendend to promote healing.
