About Flexor Tendons Lesions

What is it?

The tendons are a kind of elastic bands that depart from the muscles and adhere to the bone. Muscle contraction allows the fingers flexion.

Tendons runs along their channels very superficially and even small wounds of the palm of the hand and fingers may damage these structures.

Among the most common causes:

- Wounds of the hand (glass, knife, drift, tilting)

What are the symptoms?

- Inability (or pain) when bending fingers
- Sensitivity alterations ( fingers numb, tingling)

How is it treated?

All the wounds of the hand should be surgically explored.

“Noble” structures are many and even a small nerve and/or tendon tearing can be easily treated if recognized in emergency. In the postoperative period patient should wear braces, and physiotherapy is often recommended to promote healing. Surgery due to sutured tendons breakage and/or non-slipping condition is a wide branch of hand surgery that successfully obtains good results.
