About Dupuytren's Disease
What is it?
It is a disease that involves the fascia palmaris and is a condition in which one or more fingers become permanently bent in a flexed position.
As a chronic disease, it does not improve spontaneously but may progress very slowly.
Among the most common causes:
- Unknown origin
- Alcohol, diabetes, thyroid diseases
What are the symptoms
- Inability to extend the affected finger
- Rigidity
- Tingling
- Palm and/or dorsal nodules (at the joints), swelling wrist
- Deformed hand profile
- Stiffness and difficulty moving the hand, especially in the morning
How is it treated?
The surgery is used to change the natural progression of the disease, restoring retracted fingers motility. As skin plication may cause ulcers, diseased skin removal is necessary to prevent infections.
